Salisbury men defeat Va. Wesleyan in soccer, 2-1 Penalty-kick goal improves unbeaten streak to 5 games

Matt Tirschman's penalty-kick goal at 24: 34 of the second half propelled Salisbury State's men's soccer team to a 2-1 win Saturday over Virginia Wesleyan in Virginia Beach, Va.

The win improved the Sea Gulls to 7-3-2 and gave them their fifth consecutive game without a loss. Chris Gray added a goal for Salisbury, and Danny McVey scored for Virginia Wesleyan (6-4-1).

* Howard CC 4, Allegany CC 0: Ben Rhode scored two goals to power visiting Howard Community College (6-3) past Allegany in a Maryland JuCo League game.

E9 Joe Mitchell added a goal and two assists for Howard.

Women's soccer

Western Maryland 2, Catholic 0: Senior Erin Murphey (Francis Scott Key) became Western Maryland's career goal-scoring leader in the Green Terror's nonconference win over visiting Catholic (3-9).

Murphey opened the scoring with her 23rd career goal, surpassing the previous mark of 22 by 1992 graduate Amye Walker. It also was the team-leading ninth tally of the season for Murphey, who did not play as a freshman.

Christine Kalobius added Western Maryland's second goal with one minute left in the first half. Junior Julie Backof (Westminster) made nine saves for the shutout.

The win stopped a three-game winless streak for Western Maryland (5-7-1), and extended Catholic's losing streak to four.

Salisbury State 4, Frostburg State 1: The Sea Gulls won their sixth consecutive game by scoring a pair of goals in each half. Ava Tasker and Danielle Urban gave Salisbury (12-2) a 2-0 halftime lead, and Amy Gallagher and Ristelle James added second-half scores for visiting Frostburg. Erin Hawley added a late goal for the Bobcats (7-5-1).

Loyola 3, Siena 0: Erin Wylde (Severna Park) scored the first goal at 34: 59 as visiting Loyola (8-4, 3-0) blanked host Siena (6-5-1, 2-2) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game in Albany, N.Y. Krystin Porcella (John Carroll) and Jaime DeSoto added second-half insurance goals. Loyola outshot Siena, 23-6.

Goucher 2, St. Mary's 1: Forwards Sarah Weaver and Jade Brennan scored to power the Gophers to a 6-7 record. Goucher won despite being outshot, 12-6.

Field hockey

Western Maryland 2, Haverford 1: Katie Haley scored less than ** three minutes into overtime to give Western Maryland (6-4, 3-3) a 2-1 Centennial Conference win over visiting Haverford (1-11, 0-4).

Haley's goal was her fourth of the season, all of which have been game-winners. Freshman Kerry Wilson (North East-Cecil) tied the contest for Western Maryland with only 3: 34 left in the second half, and assisted on Haley's score. Katie O'Shea had Haverford's goal with 24: 01 remaining in the first half.

The win broke a three-game Western Maryland losing skid.

Cross country

Frostburg State won the men's title and was second in the women's events in the Maryland State Championship Cross Country Meet at Oregon Ridge State Park.

Mike Taye led the Bobcats to the men's title, and Chanda Merrill paced the women's team. Frostburg won the men's team event with 25 points, beating runner-up UMBC (67). Jimmy Storey placed third as five Bobcats runners placed in the top eight.

UMBC was led by Jamie Davis, who finished fifth, and Brian Harris of Towson State finished second.

Merrill's first-place finish helped the Bobcats (82) finish as runners-up to Loyola (66). Frostburg's Karen Carpenter finished second, but Loyola placed four runners among the top 16.

Ice hockey

Towson State 9, Maryland 0: Todd Buchler scored three goals and Rich Navin added two more as Towson State improved to 5-0.

% Maryland fell to 3-2.
