Montgomery County had the most private businesses of any locality in Maryland in 1994, according to a study released yesterday by the U.S. Commerce Department.
The county had 22,498 businesses. Baltimore County was second with 18,970 businesses, and Baltimore City ranked third with 14,290.
"These data are useful to businesses and other users that analyze market potential, determine location and size of sales territories and profile business trends geographically," department analyst Paul Hanczaryk said.
But the figures don't tell the full business story. They don't include self-employed people, farms, railroads and most government offices.
Even though it had the most private businesses, Montgomery County didn't have the most jobs in 1994. Baltimore City, with numerous federal, state and city government offices, did, with more than 400,000 total jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Montgomery County had the biggest private-business payroll, at $10.1 billion for 1994. Total business payrolls were $8.1 billion in Baltimore City and $7.5 billion in Baltimore County.
