Free programs on homeownership start next week

Harbel Housing Partnership, Patterson Park Neighborhoods Initiative and Belair-Edison Housing Service, all Baltimore-based programs, are sponsoring free homeownership programs for first-time buyers and new homeowners in October.

Harbel's workshops are slated for 6: 30 p.m. Oct. 8 and Oct. 15 at St. John's of Hamilton, 5315 Harford Road.

Part one will cover housing affordability, credit, mortgages and Baltimore County's settlement expense loan program. The second session will provide information on working with a Realtor, contracts, settlement costs and home inspection.

Patterson Park will hold a program called "Southeast Baltimore: Real Neighborhoods, Real Baltimore" from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 13 at 27 S. Patterson Park Ave. Housing counselors will offer free credit reports and information about low-cash home-buying programs. Twenty houses will be open for viewing. Information: (410) 522- 6966.

Belair-Edison has scheduled workshops for Oct. 16, Oct. 23 and Oct. 30 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the La Fontaine Bleu Crystal Room, 3107 Erdman Ave.

The home-buying process will be covered in the first workshop, credit and financing in the second and home inspection and home maintenance in the final session.

Participants will receive counseling to help them develop a home-buying plan.
