Hits and misses

September 28, 1996|By Buster Olney

On the field: Orioles starter Scott Erickson set a personal high for innings pitched in a season (222 1/3 ), surpassing his 1993 total with the Minnesota Twins (218 2/3 ). Erickson also lost his first career game in September as an Oriole. He was 8-0 in that month before last night.

In the dugout: Orioles assistant GM Kevin Malone mentioned Thursday that a great talent of Bill Ripken is that he will perform when he plays, no matter how long it's been since he took the field. Ripken replaced Roberto Alomar last night, made a nice fielding play in the first and doubled in his first at-bat.

In the clubhouse: Orioles manager Davey Johnson, on the chances of injured pitcher Alan Mills being on the postseason roster: "He was one of my main cogs all year. I can't see him being left off unless he seriously injures himself."
