Centennial season

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Peabody Symphony Orchestra, and music director Hajime Teri Murai opens its season this Saturday with a knockout program.

Stephen Kates, one of the world's great cellists, will join the orchestra for a performance of Kates' signature piece, Bloch's "Schelomo." The program will open with the overture to Verdi's "The Sicilian Vespers" and conclude with Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10.

The concert Saturday is at 8 p.m. in Friedberg Hall at Peabody. Tickets are $16; $8 for seniors; $5 for students. Call (410) 659-8124.
