Hits and misses

September 25, 1996|By Buster Olney

On the field: Former Oriole Jeff Manto ripped a long drive to deep center in the fourth inning, and Orioles center fielder Brady Anderson got a great jump, running with his back to home plate, before he leaped eight or nine feet from the wall to make the catch.

In the dugout: With Alan Mills sidelined indefinitely, the Orioles may consider activating Esteban Yan for the final games of the season, merely to absorb innings and take pressure off the other relievers. Yan, who finished the year in Triple-A, only would be used in blowout situations if the Orioles recalled him.

In the clubhouse: "Right now, we still control it. We're a game up on Seattle. We knew these two games were going to be big. The Red Sox are not going to give up." -- Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro, after the O's 13-8 loss last night.
