Hits and misses

September 24, 1996|By Buster Olney

On the field: Mike Mussina fell short in his third attempt to win 20 games. He'll have one more chance, against Toronto on Friday. Mussina never has won more than 19.

In the dugout: Manager Davey Johnson could be short-handed against the Red Sox tonight. Left-hander Jesse Orosco asked out of yesterday's game because of a stiff arm; Alan Mills (sore groin) pitched to three hitters yesterday, and the Orioles are trying to limit his appearances; and Terry Mathews pitched an inning, his third outing in the last six games.

In the clubhouse: Mussina said, "Being in the driver's seat is a good thing, but it can be too comforting at times. If there's no margin for error, sometimes you play better. We've put ourselves in a situation where we need to play our best ball."
