Maryland gains All-American DE Simmons

September 20, 1996|By Paul McMullen

It came down to the 11th hour, but defensive end Rasheed Simmons, a USA Today first-team All-American in 1993, is the newest scholarship football player at Maryland.

Simmons, 6 feet 5 and 260 pounds, spent the last two seasons at Michigan. The paperwork involving his transfer wasn't completed until Wednesday. Under NCAA rules, that was the deadline for Simmons to be enrolled as a full-time student at Maryland, and thus be eligible to play next year.

Maryland's defense includes three strong ends, but captain Al Wallace is a senior, and Simmons could fill his spot next year. Simmons, who's from Edison, N.J., has two years of eligibility remaining.
