September 18, 1996

Sgt. Bonnie Welsh, the first female cadet hired by Anne Arundel County police, has been named commander of the Anne Arundel Community College detachment of the department's field operations bureau.

Welsh, who was a member of the Eastern District patrol division, will be liaison between the college and the county police. She also will supervise civilian security officers employed by the college.

Hired by the county department in 1970, Welsh has served with the criminal investigation division, internal affairs and the police training academy. She is a 1981 graduate of the community college and twice was named county police officer of the year.
