County police arrested a Glen Burnie man yesterday and charged him with being one of a group of men who attacked a Glen Burnie woman at her home, dragged her into the woods and bound, gagged and assaulted her.

Calvin Winfield Coates, 37, of the 6600 block of Shelly Road was charged with kidnapping, a third-degree sex offense, burglary, false imprisonment, assault and battery. He was being held at the Northern District police station.

The woman, 32, suffered scratches, bruises and a head injury in the attack. She was treated at North Arundel Hospital and released.

The woman told police she answered a knock at her door about 1: 30 a.m. yesterday and that three men forced their way inside her apartment. The men dragged her into nearby woods, where they tied her wrists and ankles with rope and gagged her, police said.

The men then ripped her clothes off and hit her head against a rock, knocking her unconscious, police said. It was unclear to police whether the woman was raped in the attack.

When the woman awoke, she was able to free her legs and ran to a nearby Giant Food store in the 6600 block of Crain Highway. There, a security guard freed her arms and called police, who took her to North Arundel Hospital.

The woman told police she recognized one of her attackers and picked his picture from a police photo lineup.

Police went to Coates' apartment and arrested him. They are trying to identify the other suspects.
