Man killed when hoisted boat falls on him

An Annapolis man drowned Sunday when a 40-foot boat he was working on slipped and crushed him between it and the boat lift, county police said.

David George Richardson, 58, of the 400 block of Ferry Point Road was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Richardson was in three feet of water off a pier behind his home while he worked on the propeller of a newly restored 40-foot wooden fishing boat. The boat was suspended in the rear by a boat lift, and Richardson was underneath, police said.

The mechanical arm on the lift gave way, dropping the boat onto Richardson's chest, pinning him underwater between the boat and the lift, police said. His wife discovered his body about 7 p.m. and called police.
