Antlerless permits to increase

September 15, 1996|By Peter Baker | Peter Baker,SUN STAFF

The Department of Natural Resources has increased the allocations of antlerless deer permits for this season to maintain deer populations and maximize recreational opportunities for Maryland hunters.

Last year, 6,585 permits were issued; this year 11,190 permits will be available. According to the DNR, deer kills from the last two seasons were reported in six management zones that required permits.

Permit holders can hunt antlerless deer only on specified dates, including Junior Hunters Day (Nov. 16) and Dec. 13-14, the last two days of the firearms season.

Hunters who do not use their antlerless permit during those dates may use it for the late session of the muzzleloader season, from Dec. 21 to Jan. 4.

Applications for antlerless permits must be received at the Wildlife and Heritage Division office in Annapolis by 4: 30 p.m., Oct. 11.
