Shorebirds to begin SAL finals on road tonight

September 13, 1996|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

The best-of-five South Atlantic League championship series between the Delmarva Shorebirds and Savannah Sand Gnats will begin tonight in Georgia after the league office was forced to rework its schedule because of bad weather.

The SAL season was supposed to be completed by Sept. 15, but the involved parent clubs agreed to let the championship series continue past it. Delmarva is a Montreal Expos affiliate, Savannah a Los Angeles Dodgers club.

The second game of the series is scheduled for tomorrow in Savannah. Game 3 is set for Salisbury on Monday. Games 4 and 5, if necessary, would be in Salisbury on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The playoff schedule was interrupted last week when heavy rains from Hurricane Fran forced postponements of games in Savannah and Asheville.
