September 13, 1996

County police arrested three people on theft charges and returned a 17-year-old runaway to her parents in Deale Tuesday after a brief chase through Edgewater.

Veronica Loriane Pratt, 39, and Todd Pierre Thompson, 34, both of the 5400 block of Deale Churchton Road in Churchton; and Angelique Marie Randall, 27, of the 5200 block of Lake Ave. in Shady Side were charged with theft.

Pratt also was charged with drug possession and Thompson with traffic violations. The girl was released to her parents

Bruce Moore, a security guard for the Safeway store in the first block of Mayo Road in Edgewater, called police about 3: 30 p.m. after he caught a woman he suspected of shoplifting.

Moore told police he saw the woman pick up items from store displays and hide them in her purse. As she started for the door, Moore stopped her, and she went to a checkout line. But while he talked to police, the woman ran for the door, pushing people out of her way.

She jumped into a 1992 Ford Taurus with police in pursuit, and the car sped east on Mayo Road, police said.

Police broadcast a description of the car on police radio, and another officer spotted the car and tried unsuccessfully to stop it.

The driver turned onto Bay Ridge Road and stopped. Police arrested the driver, the woman from the grocery store and two other passengers. Police said they searched the car and found the groceries, valued at $49, a shaving case with a pipe, a small bottle with clear liquid suspected to be illegal drugs and a film canister with unidentified pills, also suspected to be illegal drugs, police said. The shoplifting suspect told police the case belonged to her.
