Shorebirds advance to SAL championship series

September 12, 1996|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

SALISBURY -- The Delmarva Shorebirds advanced to the Single-A South Atlantic League championship series last night, scoring three runs in the first inning of a 5-0 win over the Asheville Tourists and clinching the best-of-three series, 2-1.

Asheville, which played as the home team last night because its home field was deemed unplayable, had won the series opener.

The format for the championship series with the Savannah Sand Gnats will be announced today. Weather-related problems with the Delmarva-Asheville series and subsequent missed deadlines have forced the league office to rework its schedule.
