DEATHS ELSEWHERE

September 12, 1996

John Lawrence Burns, 87, retired chairman of the Boys Clubs of America, died Sunday in Greenwich, Conn. He was formerly chief executive officer of Cities Service oil company and was president of the RCA Corp. from 1957 to 1962.

When he became president of Boys Clubs in 1968, Burns led a campaign to expand to "a thousand clubs serving 1 million boys" in 10 years. The goal was reached by 1972. By the time he retired as chairman in 1988, the Boys Clubs had begun to serve girls. The organization's name was changed to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America in 1990.
