WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Clark MacKenzie of Lutherville built a 4-up lead through 10 holes, then hung on for a 1-up decision over Joseph Riordan of Flagstaff, Ariz., in the first round of match play at the USGA Senior Amateur Championship on the 6,520-yard, par-71 Taconic Golf Club.

MacKenzie, a member of the Green Spring Valley Hunt Club, birdied the 506-yard 10th for his widest margin of the match. At that point, Riordan had not won a hole, but he took four of the next seven. MacKenzie squeezed out a winner with a par at the 155-yard 14th, and it turned out to be the deciding margin.
