Salisbury has no problem against Del. Valley, 40-0 Kershaw throws for 2 TDs in rare Sea Gulls shutout

Kris Kershaw threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns as host Salisbury State routed Delaware Valley, 40-0, yesterday at Sea Gull Stadium. It was the Sea Gulls' first shutout since 1987.

The Sea Gulls (1-0) opened the scoring 3 1/2 minutes into the game on a 52-yard pass from Kershaw to Mike Muldoon. Delaware Valley (0-1) totaled only 183 yards of offense.

Salisbury registered six sacks and forced four turnovers. Delaware Valley was penalized nine times for 52 yards.

Myron Dent led the Sea Gulls in rushing, gaining 82 of his 91 yards on a fourth-quarter touchdown run.

Bridgewater 10, W. Md. 6

Frank Richardson rushed for 70 yards and scored the eventual winning touchdown as Bridgewater (1-0) snapped a 24-game winless streak by defeating Western Maryland (0-1) in the non-conference season opener for both teams.

Richardson, a sophomore tailback who carried the ball 25 times, capped a nine-play, 55-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run with 6: 15 remaining in the game. Michael Padgett, who opened the scoring with a 37-yard field goal midway through the first quarter, added the extra point to give the Eagles a 10-0 lead.

Norfolk 20, Bowie 14

Richard Morris passed for 234 yards and two touchdowns to lead Norfolk State (1-1) over host Bowie State (0-2).
