Local colleges open Web site tomorrow One aim is to attract students to the area

A Web site that debuts tomorrow makes a convincing case that Baltimore City and County are a "college town."

Against all odds and their own preconceptions, college and university officials throughout the Baltimore area have put aside their traditional jostling to bind for a common cause: the Baltimore Collegetown Network.

"We're trying to promote Baltimore, and to get the idea across that this is a good place to be," said Cami Colarossi, associate director of communications at Goucher College in Towson, a co-ordinator of the project. "This isn't the Baltimore of [television's] 'Homicide.' "

Four students at the Maryland Institute, College of Art spent a total of 1,500 hours designing the playful Web site. (The Internet address is http: //www.colltown.org) They included in it links to categories of academics, hangouts, culture, history and sports.

The creators of the network, which covers everything from the community colleges to research universities, hope to attract interest from prospective students and their families. But college officials also want the Web site to be an information clearinghouse for students already here.

The Web site "makes us stronger as proponents of Baltimore when we know what else is going on in the community," said John Hachtel, spokesman for the University of Maryland at Baltimore.

"It's not only going to benefit students interested in going to school in the area, it's a benefit to people who are in academic communities at large."
