Navy at a glance

September 06, 1996

Coach: Charlie Weatherbie (20-25 overall, 5-6 at Navy last season).

Conference: Independent

Radio: WITH (1230 AM)

Stadium: Navy-Marine Corps Memorial (30,000)

Offense: Triple-option spread offense.

Defense: Navy employs an unusual five-back alignment.

Top returning players: Ben Fay (QB), Chris McCoy (QB), Pat McGrew (SB), Tim Cannada (FB), Astor Heaven (WR), Corey Schemm (SB), Brian Drechsler (C), Clint Bruce (LB), Chad Holzapfel (OT), Sean Andrews (CB), Gervy Alota (FS), Robert Green (CB).

Top newcomers: Desmond Morgan (S), Jason Snider (DT), Tim Shubzda (PK), Enrico Hunter (KR).

Strengths: Navy has a versatile tandem at quarterback in resourceful Fay and elusive McCoy, who totaled 1,327 yards running and passing as a sophomore. There is experience on both lines, and more depth than in 1995, especially in the receiving corps and secondary headed by All-America candidate Andrews.

Weaknesses: Weatherbie is searching for reliable punter to replace Brian Schrum and a steady place-kicker.

Strongest opponent: Notre Dame. The Irish will take a 32-game winning streak against Midshipmen to Dublin, Ireland, on Nov. 2.

Key game: Army, as always. Navy has lost the last four season-ending clashes with their rivals by a total of six points.
