Cantor to discuss themes and tunes for Rosh Hashana

"The Melody and the Meaning" is the title of the opening program of the "Pardes-Enter the Orchard of Jewish Wisdom" series at Randallstown Synagogue, 8729 Church Lane, Randallstown.

Cantor Nossi Gross will demonstrate the connection between the themes of Rosh Hashana prayers and the "nusach," the traditional tunes, in the program at 10 p.m. tomorrow.

The goal is to combine a deeper understanding of some of the most popular prayers with an appreciation of the musical chant.

Oak Grove Baptist Church to dedicate education site

Oak Grove Baptist Church will dedicate its new $1.4 million education building at 2 p.m. Sunday, at 2106 Churchville Road in Churchville.

The Rev. Aubrey Stewart, Oak Grove's former co-pastor, will be the speaker at the ceremony. Among those invited are current and past members, local church pastors, Maryland/Delaware Southern Baptist Convention directors and Harford County and state officials.

The 26,500-square-foot, three-floor building includes a large conference room on the upper level that will be used for education and social gatherings such as weddings, parties, church socials and community meetings.

Oak Grove Baptist is known for its Living Christmas Tree performances. More than 90,000 people have attended the performances in the past decade.

Women's Day group plans Unity Day at Shiloh Church

The Women's Day Committee of Shiloh Christian Community Church will celebrate Unity Day beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday. Guest preacher will be the Rev. Therm James. His choirs and the congregation of Bethany Baptist Church also will attend. The church is at 2500 W. Lombard St., Baltimore.

Translating the Bible to be topic of lecture

Dr. Everett Fox of Clark University, Worcester, Mass., will deliver a lecture, "The Art of Translating the Bible," at 7: 30 p.m. Sunday at Baltimore Hebrew University, 5800 Park Heights Ave.

Fox is the author of "The Schocken Bible, Volume I, The Five Books of Moses, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, a new Translation with Introductions, Commentary, and Notes."

The program is part of the school's annual convocation.
