Man charged in assault arrested in driving case

September 04, 1996

A Westminster man free on $100,000 bond on charges of assaulting three police officers in June was arrested Monday and charged with drunken driving.

Keith Louis Douglas, 28, of the first block of John St. was being held on $3,500 bond at the Carroll County Detention Center, pending a bail review in District Court today.

In charging documents, city police said a man later identified as Douglas was stopped about 9: 30 p.m. after an officer saw a pickup spin wheels while turning off West Main Street in Westminster.

An open can of beer fell from the truck when the driver opened the door, police said. The driver was arrested after failing a field sobriety test, police said.

Douglas is set for trial Jan. 7 in the alleged assault on the officers.

Charging documents in that case said he began to pull a loaded .38-caliber pistol from behind his back on June 14 while being ordered to show his hands to three sheriff's deputies in a driveway in the 7900 Bennett Branch Road, where the officers were assigned duty during a drug raid.

He also was charged on one count of concealing a deadly weapon, court records show.

In another incident, Douglas was identified as the driver of a Ford Thunderbird that crashed July 24 after running off Buffalo Road near Black Ankle Road. He and his brother, Jack Albert Douglas, 29, were treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital and released, police said.

Another passenger, Timothy J. Becker, was flown in critical condition to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was treated and released.
