Schwing Northwest to open in Owings Mills

Schwing Motor Co. Inc., which has operated a new car dealership at Keswick Road in Hampden for 66 years, will establish a presence in the Owings Mills area.

But the opening of the new showroom in the 9700 block of Reisterstown Road won't come at the expense of Schwing's city location, a BMW dealership popular with motorists who work downtown. In a rather unusual move, Schwing has formed a joint venture with Northwest Honda in which the two dealerships will share in the opening of a third dealership -- Schwing Northwest BMW.

"Schwing Motor Co. will stay intact," said Frederick Schwing, president of the dealership. "Northwest Honda will stay intact. This is an additional facility, not a replacement or a relocation of a dealership."

Edward Dreiband, president of Northwest Honda, said construction of a 16,000 square foot, stand alone, showroom is expected to be completed in time for a mid-November opening. It will be adjacent to the Honda dealership.

Schwing said the new dealership will be operated by Dreiband because of his proximity to the site.

The new full-service dealership will employ about 30 people, said Schwing.

Schwing said manufacturers seem to be rethinking their past strategies of encouraging dealers to locate outside the city limits.

"They are starting to realize that it's a mistake to abandon the city," he said. "In the 1970s most of the auto manufacturers forgot that there were 2 million people living inside the Beltway."
