Local Sports: High School Girls Soccer Preview

September 01, 1996|By John W. Stewart

Aberdeen Eagles

1995 record: 1-8-3.

Coach: Jim McClenahan.

Top players: Amanda Laughton, Sr., F; Nicole Scott, Sr., D; Diane Cundra, D, Jr.; Jenny Baughman, So., F.

Outlook: With the best forward line in years, and a maturing defense, McClenahan expects this team to be much improved. There are 11 seniors, eight juniors, and four sophomores for the largest turnout in a long time, and chances are good for reversing last year's goals-for and goals-against numbers.

Bel Air Bobcats

1995 record: 9-5.

Coach: Bill Zimmerman.

Top players: Lauren Hess, Sr., F; Kristi Smithson, Sr., M; Heidi Buchanan, Jr., D; Angela DeFabio, Jr., F; Kathy Holmes, Jr., D; Becca Jones, Jr., F; Colleen Keefe, Jr., G; Kelly Krieger, Jr., M.

Outlook: There could be as many as eight returning starters -- two seniors, six juniors -- in the lineup. The key will be blending at least four sophomores, and getting the group to play as a team.

C. M. Wright Mustangs

1995 record: 11-3.

Coach: Peter Griffiths.

Top players: Erin Lesh, Sr., M; Angie Byrd, Jr., F; Jamie Gerhart, Jr., F; Kristen Joel, Kr., D; Madeleine Thompson, Jr., F.

Outlook: There has been some progress during the preseason, but still many questions after the loss of six starters.

Edgewood Rams

1995 record: 2-10-1.

Coach: Matt Rankin.

Top players: Amy Higgins, Sr., M; Nicole Hill, Sr., D; Terri Staab, So., D; Stephanie Wilhelm, Fr., F.

Outlook: This was a predominantly young team a year ago, and will be again (possibly as many as six sophomores and six freshmen), but the presence of experienced players has increased the skill level. An improved record is possible, with an immediate goal of .500.

Fallston Cougars

1995 record: 15-1.

Coach: Nancy Ferguson.

Top players: Jenn Cook, Sr., D; Jen Kardash, Sr. D; Karen Tiedemann, Sr., M; Cindy Wolf, Sr., M; Christy Peterson, Jr., D.

Outlook: This team lost more than 50 goals to graduation, so it will be mixing and matching up front. There is a strong holdover defense in front of solid goalkeeper Candi Kuligowski.

Havre de Grace Warriors

1995 record: 1-10-2.

Coach: Tara Custer

Top players: Elizabeth Carr, Sr., D; Raven Reedy, Sr., G; Shirley Yankalonis, Sr., D; Alysha Lynch, Jr., D; Melissa Persones, So., F.

Outlook: This is expected to be a much better team than in the past three years. There are more players (22), and more talent, with .500 a goal. The squad has responded well to motivation and hard work.

John Carroll Patriots

1995 record: 10-6-2.

Coach: John Hughes.

Top players: Trisha Taylor, Sr., D; Katie Tiburzi, Sr., M; Bonnie Zilka, Sr., D.

Outlook: As many as seven holdovers could start, but the team is not as deep as in recent seasons. A strong defense and a corps of scorers led by Tiburzi, last year's top goal-getter, have the new coach thinking the Patriots could challenge in the Catholic League.

Joppatowne Mariners

1995 record: 8-7.

Coach: Chris Myers.

Top players: Sara Biggs, Sr., F; Sarah Brill, Sr., G; Nicole Duval, Sr., D; Carrie Gorsch, Sr., D; Nicole Simone, Sr., F; Tanya Meeke, Soph., M.

Outlook: There is plenty of experience with Biggs, Duval, and Gorsch four-year starters, and Simone, three. The aggressive Duval, a two-year starter in goal, has moved to the field, with Brill, who missed last year, back in goal. Among the holdovers are excellent defenders and the team's top three scorers. Lack of depth could be a problem.

North Harford Hawks

1995 record: 11-4-1.

Coach: Tom Berg.

Top players: Jenny Ayres, Sr., M; Suzanne Eyler, Jr., F; Danelle Konschak, Sr., M; Tara Schlerf, Sr., D; Amy Scotten, Sr., F; Renee Valle, Jr., F.

Outlook: Four senior starters should provide leadership, and the team has the potential to do well against a tough schedule that includes non-league foes Catonsville, Hereford, Patapsco, and Perry Hall.
