Towson beats Mercer, 4-0, in men's soccer opener

Freshman Jarkko Haavisto scored two second-half goals as the Towson State men's soccer team opened its season with a 4-0 win over Mercer yesterday in the Navy Invitational Tournament.

Haavisto scored at 51: 04 to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead and closed the scoring with 11 minutes remaining, connecting off a pass from Tony Flore (Westminster).

Peter Medd and Jim Cherneski also scored for Towson, and sophomore goalkeeper Ethan Jennings recorded his fourth career shutout.

Navy 0, Villanova 0, 2OT: The Midshipmen outshot Villanova 17-9 but were unable to score in the first round of the Navy Invitational. The Wildcats' Matt Westfall recorded 17 saves and Greg Stepler had seven for Navy in the season opener for both schools.

Western Maryland 0, Marymount 0, 2OT: The teams played to a scoreless tie in their season opener at the Blue Ridge TTC Tournament in Lynchburg, Va.

Women's soccer

Maryland 1, St. Mary's, Calif. 0: Emily Janss converted a corner kick by Maureen McDonogh in the 75th minute as the No. 10 Terps opened their season with a victory Friday night in the first round of the Wahine Festival in Honolulu.

Mary Washington 2, Johns Hopkins 0: Johanna Klein scored the first goal and assisted on the second in the first 15 minutes to lead No. 8 Mary Washington past host Johns Hopkins in the season opener for both teams.

Franklin & Marshall 6, Villa Julie 0: Missy Coroso scored a goal in each half as the Diplomats beat visiting Villa Julie in the first round of the Franklin & Marshall Invitational in Lancaster, Pa., the season opener for both squads.
