Ashley Williams, director of communications of the Howard County Chamber of Commerce, recently completed a program of the Institute for Organization Management at the University of Delaware. The professional development program, designed for chamber and association executives, covers membership retention, quality management, volunteer leadership development and non-dues revenue enhancement.

State's Attorney Marna McLendon was recently elected to serve on the board of directors of Grassroots Crisis Intervention Inc. The nonprofit organization provides 24-hour crisis intervention and emergency shelter programs.

Bruce Toland and Tom Smith, gardening experts, have joined the staff of Metzler's Garden Center in Hickory Ridge. Both are specialists in water gardening. Toland will also focus on perennials, Smith on herbs and wild bird feeding.

Thomas A. Saathoff has been named golf professional and general manager for the Timbers at Troy, Howard County's first public golf course, developed by the Rainmaker Group and managed by Kemper Golf Management -- a division of the Kemper Lesnik Organization. Saathoff comes from Ohio, where he opened the PipeStone Golf Club. He was tournament director for the LPGA World Match play 1990-1991 and coordinated the purchase of more than $1 million in merchandise for the 1989 PGA Championship. Richard H. Shepherd Jr., owner and president of Columbia Pontiac Buick GMC auto dealership, will serve on a panel at the Youth Entrepreneurial Symposium, sponsored by the Umoja Children Inc., Sept. 21 in Baltimore. The symposium will offer workshops for youth, educators and parents on ways to improve and invest in neighborhood quality of life.
