Pediatric rehabilitation now available in county Partnership creates outpatient clinic

Children in Anne Arundel County who need rehabilitation services won't have to travel to Baltimore any more for help.

Comprehensive Rehabilitation Care Inc. (CRC), an outpatient rehabilitation facility in Glen Burnie, and Mount Washington Pediatric Health System in Baltimore have formed a partnership to create an outpatient pediatric rehabilitation program.

The program, which began this month, operates out of CRC's office in the Empire Medical Building in the 200 block of Hospital Drive.

"We have for the last five years been focused on adults, but there has been nothing in this Anne Arundel County area for pediatric [rehabilitation]," said Jim Padden, director of CRC.

CRC had been referring children to Kennedy Krieger Institute, Johns Hopkins or Mount Washington, all in Baltimore, Padden said.

"We're very excited about this program. We really think it's going to meet a need," he said.

Mount Washington and CRC have been referring patients to each other for years and the partnership is a logical step, said Sheldon Stein, senior vice president of patient care services at the hospital.

"We think it's going to be an excellent service for the residents of that county. It's nice to have services in your own backyard," Stein said.

The outpatient program accommodates children through age 18 who have problems such as traumatic head injuries, broken legs or arms, muscle strains and speech difficulties.

Dr. George Lentz, a pediatrician from Mount Washington who is trained in physical therapy, will oversee the program. Mount Washington also is providing pediatric equipment and additional rehabilitation staff to work with CRC staff members.

Specialties available include physical, occupational and speech therapy, social work and neuro-psychology services.

The program, which has eight pediatric patients, will develop slowly over the next six months, Padden said.

CRC and Mount Washington formed the partnership after an informal survey of local pediatricians indicated a need.

CRC is a joint venture of North Arundel Health System and the University of Maryland Medical System.
