Dunbar principal Charlotte Brown will hire Lynn Badham as boys basketball coach, a source close to the interview process said yesterday.

Brown would not comment but said she expected to announce the new coach today. Badham, who coached at Douglass last season, also would not comment last night.

Paul Smith, who led the Poets to three state titles, was notified of his firing on Aug. 9 in a letter from Brown.

Others interviewed for the job were Southern coach Meredith Smith, junior varsity coaches Paul Holmes (Dunbar) and Ollie Matson (Randallstown) and former Dunbar and Maryland standout Ernie Graham.

Badham was a seven-year assistant to Bob Wade at Dunbar, winning five JV championships. He was varsity coach at Forest Park in 1987-88, going 15-2 and earning Baltimore Sun All-Metro Coach of the Year honors. Forest Park had gone winless in four previous seasons.

Before taking over at Douglass last year, Badham was an assistant coach in football and JV basketball at McDonogh, with his last basketball team going 13-2.
