Young collectors to learn about 'sporting paintings'

Learn about art collecting at the Maryland Historical Society's Young Collectors Evening Sept. 26. The evening will feature cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a lecture on "Collecting Sporting Paintings from Stubbs to Munnings" by Nancy Harrison, senior vice president and director of 19th-century European paintings at Sotheby's in New York.

The event will mark the closing of the historical society's exhibition, "The Thrill of Excellence," on loan from the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, that included two dozen paintings and drawings depicting Thoroughbreds and horse racing. The event also offers a prelude to the Maryland Antiques Show Nov. 8-10.

Tickets for the Young Collectors Evening are $35 and include admission Nov. 8 to a cocktail reception and curators' tour of an antiques show led by MHS staff. Call (410) 685-3750.

Art instructors

The Columbia Association Art Center is looking for art instructors to teach classes or workshops during the January-April session. Classes may focus on any medium and age range. The deadline for proposals is Sept. 30. The center is at 6100 Foreland Garth in Columbia. Call (410) 730-0075.

Families of America

You and your family have a chance to become part of a historic Smithsonian exhibit, "The American Family," sponsored by Discover card to celebrate the American family and the Smithsonian Institution's 150th birthday.

To participate, send a family photo to Discover card. Three thousand photos will be randomly selected to be included in the exhibit, scheduled to open next year.

Joyous Voices seeks sopranos, altos, tenors and basses to form a new professional Christmas caroling group in the Baltimore area. Performing a cappella in quartet, singers should be good readers and enjoy entertaining in a variety of settings and venues. Singers will be asked to prepare contrasting Christmas songs, to be sung without accompaniment during auditions Sept. 4 and Sept. 6. Call (410) 356-0412.

Auditions for Catonsville Community College's "Works in Progress" take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 in the college's Fine and Performing Arts Center, 800 S. Rolling Road. The Silver Spring Stage has scheduled auditions for "The Snow Ball" by A. R. Gurney from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 7 and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 8 at the stage, 10145 Colesville Road in Silver Spring. Needed are 11 women, age 20 to early 50's, and five men, age 20 to early 50's. Call (301) 588-2878.

Auditions for the Peabody Children's Chorus, which includes four levels of vocal ensembles for ages 6-18, are scheduled for tomorrow at Peabody Institute on Charles Street and Tuesday at Peabody's Towson Branch. Auditions for new members of the Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra are scheduled Saturdays through Sept. 14 at Catonsville Community College, Humanities Building Q. The orchestra begins its 33rd season in September. Call (410) 442-5645.

The Maryland State Boychoir is accepting applications Sept. 1-30 from singers interested in joining the group. Boys should be between the ages of 7 and 18, live in Maryland, possess a love for music and a willingness to work toward a high level of professional performance. The Baltimore Choral Arts Society will conduct auditions by appointment for experienced volunteer singers from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 3-5. The chorus rehearses Mondays and performs at least eight concerts a season. Call (410) 523-7070.
