Painter dies, second hurt when cable comes apart

August 22, 1996

A painter died and his co-worker was critically injured after a cable on a cherry picker snapped Tuesday evening in New Windsor, tossing the men 20 to 25 feet to the ground, state police said yesterday.

Ottis R. Mullican, 23, of Union Bridge and Timothy E. Kelly, 25, of Rocky Ridge in Frederick County were flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with critical head injuries, police said.

Mullican died early yesterday and Kelly was in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The men were painting a barn, working from separate buckets of the construction truck, when the accident occurred about 7: 55 p.m., police said.
