Man arrested in assault on salesman

Police arrested a Prince Frederick man Tuesday on charges that he threatened a sales representative from a competing cigarette company with a knife.

Douglas Mackay Campbell, 37, of the 500 block of Patuxent Reach Drive was charged with assault, assault by threat and possession of a deadly weapon.

Todd Bennett Mattingly, 27, a sales representative for Phillip Morris Co., called police to Southdown Liquors in the 3100 block of Solomons Island Road just before 9: 30 a.m. and told them he had been threatened by another sales representative.

Mattingly said he was at the store when the man approached him and threatened to cut off his fingers if he changed the man's merchandise display again.

Mattingly left the store, drove to a nearby grocery store and called police. An officer went to the store and spoke with a man, not realizing he was the suspect, police said.

As Mattingly saw the man leave the store, he told the officer, but the suspect had driven away, police said.

Police broadcast a description of the car, which an officer stopped on Route 2 near Mayo Road. The man told police he had had a business argument and admitted having a box-cutting knife but denied touching Mattingly, police said. He was arrested.

2 men rob Severn store at gunpoint, strike clerk

Two armed men robbed a Severn package-goods store yesterday of an undisclosed amount of money, then hit a clerk over the eye with a cognac bottle, county police said.

The clerk, a Severn man, was treated at North Arundel Hospital for a cut above his right eye and released.

Police said two masked men, one with a shotgun, walked into Bill's Package Goods in the 1600 block of Annapolis Road about 1: 30 a.m. The gunman pointed his weapon at the clerk and demanded money from the cash registers. The second man forced another employee into a back office, demanded the security videotape and ordered her to lie face-down on the floor, police said The clerks complied with the robbers' demands. The second man then walked behind the counter and struck one clerk above his right eye with a liquor bottle, police said.

The robbers ran outside and to the rear of the store, where a third man was waiting, and all three ran toward Pioneer City, police said.

$1,000 in electronic goods stolen from Severn home

A Severn home was broken into Monday, and $1,000 worth of electronic equipment was stolen, county police said.

Clinton W. Mugge, 24, of the 1700 block of Independence Court called police to his home shortly before 8 a.m. Monday after he found his home burglarized.
