End of summer means getting children ready for school again

THE END of summer is near.

Moms are the first to notice the subtle change. You can see relief in their eyes as they ease their kids through the store toward the stacks of Hunchback folders and Genie backpacks.

Little furrowed brows have begun to replace the summer smiles on the faces of veteran students. They know how soon the thrill of new clothes fades, how quickly long evenings outdoors become a time for homework.

Speaking of homework, maybe you'd like to get away from yours and try teaching a class at the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County.

The YWCA needs instructors for adult, youth and fitness education programs for all ages.

Schedules are flexible. If you have an idea for a class or would like to teach in an established program, call the YWCA at (410) 626-7800 or stop by the headquarters in Arnold.

Rally Day

Our Shepherd Lutheran Church on Benfield Road so anticipates the return to normality after vacation time that it begins the fall season with Rally Day at 9: 30 a.m. Sept. 8.

"Is There An Angel In the House?" a sermon-skit by the Rev. C. Frederick Eichner, will be presented along with music -- adult and children's choirs and brass accompaniment -- directed by Mary-Jo Bedsworth.

Associate Pastor Andrea Manspeaker suggests you'll really enjoy the puppet play directed by Youth Director Alice Leigh and Dave Ingall's oompah band.

Call 647-1658.

5-mile run

Since the mild weather this summer has allowed us to continue all of our outdoor activities, we should be in perfect shape for the Dawson's Severna Park 5-Mile Run.

Beginning at 8 a.m. Sept. 8 at Severna Park High School, the race follows a mostly flat course along residential streets and the B & A Trail.

This is the seventh leg of the Annapolis Striders 10-race club championship series, co-sponsored by the county Department of Recreation and Parks.

Enter by mail before Sept. 2 or on race day beginning at 6: 30 a.m. The fee is $3 for members, $4 for nonmembers. It's $1 more on race day. Call (410) 268-1165.

CROP walk

Representatives from churches and other groups interested in the Anne Arundel County/Severna Park CROP Walk are invited to attend an organizational meeting at 7: 30 p.m., Wednesday in the old rectory building on the grounds of St. Martin's In The Field Episcopal Church.

Recruiter materials will be available at the meeting for this year's walk, which will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 13. The walk begins at Jones Elementary School and follows the B & A Trail.

The local CROP Walk raises money for hunger relief through Church World Service and the Severna Park Assistance Network.

For information, call SPAN at 647-0889.
