An upright approach to roasting

Convinced that "healthy, tasty home cooking is here to stay," Sunbeam is reintroducing its Carousel Rotisserie, a counter-top device that allows you to cook chicken, roasts or lamb on a vertical spit, and potatoes and other vegetables in a cooking basket at the bottom. The 15 1/2 -inch-tall device has a suggested retail price of $89.99.

Half a hen

Perdue Cornish hens are now available with a split personality -- that is, each hen has been split in half. The halves are perfect for grilling, sauteing, broiling or baking, and they cook in about half the time of the whole bird. Four halves cost about $1.89 a pound. For recipes, send name and address to Perdue Grilling Greats, P.O. Box 708CH, Spring House, Pa. 19477.

Vegetarians abroad

Travelers to Israel who are on a vegetarian or kosher diet can find restaurants that serve their needs in the "Guide to Vegetarian Restaurants in Israel," by Mark Weintraub and the Vegetarian Resource Group. There are historical notes about each location, a few menu listings, hours and average prices. To order a copy, send $10 to the Vegetarian Resource Group, P.0. Box 1463, Baltimore, Md. 21203.

Wine festival

Most of the state's four dozen wineries will be represented at the Virginia Wine Festival Aug. 24 and 25 at the Great Meadow, The Plains, Va. There will be 250 wines to taste, plus crafts, live music and activities for children. Tickets are $16; $5 for those under 21. Call (800) 520-9670.
