Regina Swearingen, vice president of new business development and marketing at The Baltimore Sun, yesterday was named vice president in charge of marketing and business development for Apartment Search Inc., the nation's largest apartment search company catering to renters.

Times Mirror Co., the Los Angeles-based media company that includes The Sun, completed its acquisition of Apartment Search earlier this week.

Swearingen, 36, will lead Apartment Search's advertising, public relations and marketing efforts, which will include expanding markets and seeking new growth.

"The opening of the Baltimore Sun Apartment Search business and the operations of the stores were in my area of responsibility at The Sun," said Swearingen, who joined the newspaper in 1988 and has been working with Apartment Search for the last 18 months.

Based in Minneapolis, Apartment Search services prospective renters through 37 stores in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Kansas City, Detroit, Washington and Baltimore. With a database of more than 600,000 rental units and 450 employees, the company expects to serve about 160,000 renters this year.

Swearingen will assume her new position Sept. 3 and will report to Bill Deters, the company's president and founder. She will be based in Ellicott City. The company will report to Mary E. Junck, publisher and chief executive officer of The Sun.
