Hits and misses

August 15, 1996|By Buster Olney

On the field: Cal Ripken was charged with an error on an odd play in the sixth inning. Milwaukee left fielder Marc Newfield hit a hot smash back to pitcher Roger McDowell, who deflected the ball toward Ripken. But the Orioles' shortstop couldn't field the ricochet cleanly, his 11th error of the year. That broke a streak of 65 errorless innings by the Orioles.

In the dugout: Esteban Yan did not pitch yesterday. He did not pitch the day before that. In fact, he hasn't pitched since being called up from Triple-A Rochester on Aug. 3.

In the clubhouse: "We have to take it day by day, see what happens. As long as we keep winning a few, and they lose a few, we are going to gain some ground. We are winning a few games, having a lot of fun. . . . This team is showing what we're capable of." -- Orioles second baseman Roberto Alomar, after the Orioles won for the 11th time in their last 15 games.
