New Directions Fashion signals are clear cut

August 15, 1996|By Vida Roberts | Vida Roberts,Fashion Editor

Fashion is back on a straight and narrow road. Who needs detours? Costumey and historic references have been stripped away, reducing this fall's fashion to the leanest common denominator. The excitement is in the long line, ease, simplicity.

It's a season for clothes modern women will actually be able to wear. Yes, there are references to the '70s, but that decade merely anticipated modernity. Today's fashions are for tomorrow.

Clothes now have built-in motion and versatility. Pants, the strongest trend for fall, are cut as narrow and clean as action wear. Knits, in luxury and techno fabrications, negotiate curves gently. Suits, cut with military styling, are easy to wear with confidence.
