Silver dress doesn't require matching shoes

August 15, 1996|By Elsa Klensch | Elsa Klensch,Los Angeles Times Syndicate

I'm going to boarding school, and at the end of the summer there's a fancy orientation for the freshman class. I bought a short, sleeveless silver dress, and I'm in love with it. My mother -- who is hopelessly old-fashioned -- says I have to wear silver shoes with it. I think matching shoes would look silly, and, besides, where would I ever use them again?

London-based shoe designer Manolo Blahnik agrees with you: "Matching shoes may be totally appropriate for your mother, but I think something young and kicky would be better for you."

Blahnik suggests white sandals or one of the new patent-leather, pastel wedges, which "are everywhere this summer," adding: "Take your mother shopping with you. She'll probably be convinced when she sees the young and pretty choices that are available."
