Nipper, the dog star

On Saturday, Baltimore's favorite 14-foot star dog takes center stage at the Baltimore City Life Museums from noon to 4 p.m. Nipper, the RCA mascot, and his trademark gramophone will preside over a series of activities for families and dog lovers.

This "Dog Days of Summer" event features activities including stories about dogs, The Nipper Relay and "Putting on the Dog," where children can get their face painted to look just like Nipper.

Baltimore City Life Museums is at 33 S. Front St. All activities are free with museum admission of $6 for adults, $4 for children and seniors. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For more information, call (410) 396-3523. On Sunday, the Indian community and the Baltimore Office of Promotion celebrate India's 49th annual day of independence. Experience a colorful celebration of India's rich culture at Hopkins Plaza from noon to 7 p.m., with festive performances and live dancing.

Attractions will include food, vendors and the Twix van, an 18-foot replica of a Twix bar, with giveaways and more.
