Spilling the beans on food trends

What does it mean if you have a pantry full of canned beans? What if you like Thai cuisine, serve guests Sam Adams or Clipper City beer or possess a food processor? According to the Steel Packaging Council's "What's Hot" report, it means you're in tune with today's trends. Asian food and specialty breads are also deemed hot; crockpots, kebabs and afternoon tea parties are not.

Cake, cake everywhere

Just imagine: a giant room filled with gorgeously decoratecakes from the United States and around the world. That will be the scene at the Baltimore Convention Center Aug. 16 through 18 when the International Cake Exploration Societe opens its show and exhibition. You can't eat the cakes, but there'll be demonstrations, cake-decorating wares for sale and author book signings. The exhibit is open to the public Friday and Saturday, admission $5.
