Seminar will teach businesses to improve customer service

THE WEST Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a seminar, "How to Give Your Business a Winning Edge with Excellent Customer Service," from 7: 30 to 10 a.m., Aug. 28.

The event will be at the Holiday Inn Express BWI Airport West on Route 176.

Ann Cunningham and Nancy Milner, customer service representatives with BGE, and John Jorda, general manager of Capitol Corridor Agency Prudential, will discuss phone etiquette, how to treat customers in your place of business, dealing with the irate customer and how to keep a customer for life.

A continental breakfast will be served. The cost is $20 for chamber members and $30 for non-members.

Culinary events

Members of Trinity United Methodist Church will sell barbecue chicken carryout from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church grounds, 956 Patuxent Road, Odenton.

The menu will consist of chicken, cole slaw and a role for $4.

The Kiwanis Club of Odenton will have a bake sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday in front of the Super Fresh in Odenton. All proceeds go toward youth programs in the community.

Gardening meeting

The Flower and Herb Guild of the O'Malley Senior Center will hold its monthly meeting from 12: 30 to 2: 30 p.m., Aug. 21.

Marion Adams of Gambrills Garden Center, 1275 Odenton Road, will conduct a workshop on planting a living wreath.

Career advice

Single mothers and low-income homemakers interested in pursuing training in vocational or a nontraditional field are encouraged to contact the YWCA Career Services in Odenton for career advising, tuition assistance, child care and transportation.

The program is for women over 30, who have worked primarily in the home or need to recover financial independence after a separation, divorce, death or husband's disability.

Fees range from $1 to $4, depending on income.

Fort Meade brunch

The Retired Officers' Wives' Club kicks off the year with its 19th Anniversary Welcome Brunch at 10 a.m., Sept. 3 at the Officers' Club at Fort Meade.
