Last Merry-Go-Round auctions start Friday

MARYLAND WATCH

August 13, 1996

Merry-Go-Round Enterprises Inc., the once great and now defunct Joppa-based fashion retailer, will hold its last two public auctions Friday and Saturday.

To date, more than $2.5 million has been raised through five auctions and numerous sealed-bid sales conducted by Baltimore-based Atlantic Auctions Inc.

On Friday, the auction at the company's Joppa headquarters will center on office furnishings, including leather sofas, file cabinets and office partitions.

Saturday's auction will feature music and entertainment memorabilia, gold and diamond jewelry, leather jackets and skirts, laptop computers, software and printers.

In addition, the second-day auction will offer retail equipment, such as mannequins, garment displays and carpeting, as well as forklifts, trucks and telephone equipment.

The last item up for auction -- the retailer's 1 million-square-foot headquarters -- is scheduled to be sold next week at a hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

May Department Stores Co. has emerged as the front-runner with an offer of $19 million for the complex.
