Negotiations to hold the 1998 Army-Navy football game at the new NFL stadium at Camden Yards apparently have ended, with the Midshipmen reportedly near an agreement with the Meadowlands in New Jersey.

Navy athletic director Jack Lengyel met with officials of the Meadowlands and West Point earlier this week to arrange a game there between the service academies in 1997.

"If we play Army in New Jersey in 1997, then we are obligated to play the game the following year in Philadelphia," Lengyel said. "Under our current agreement with Philadelphia, we have to play at least every other year there."

Navy sources also said yesterday that the Midshipmen will likely play Notre Dame in 1998 at Washington Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke's new stadium currently under construction in Landover.

Lawyers representing Cooke are working out the final contract.

Baltimore also was interested in playing host to that game but now will have to wait at least until the new century.

Miscellaneous

Lengyel said that none of the 15 midshipmen expelled for drug use this summer were members of the football team. . . . The Mids will appear in at least three TV games this season -- against Duke (HTS), Oct. 5; vs. Notre Dame on tape delay (CBS) from Ireland, Nov. 2; and the finale with Army, Dec. 7, also on CBS. . . .
