Clark MacKenzie, 55, and Bob Ellett, 74, at opposite ends of Senior experience, claimed two of the four available places during U.S. Senior Open local qualifying at Chestnut Ridge Country Club yesterday.

MacKenzie, from Green Spring Valley Hunt Club, shot 2-over-par 74 in his first try for the event, and shared the medal with Yancey Ford Jr., from Winston-Salem, N.C. Ellett, from Hunt Valley Golf Club, posted 75, and James Kite, of Stannardsville, Va., won the final spot with a birdie at the first extra hole to edge Dave King, Bethesda Country Club, after they had tied with 76's.

MacKenzie ran off 11 straight pars before encountering a rough path to a triple-bogey seven at the par-4 third, then bounced back with a pair of birdies. Ellett, making the championship for the eighth time, admitted he entered only because it was close to his home. His only departure from an otherwise solid round was a three-putt from 10 feet for a double bogey.

Ford, enjoying a series of Senior tournaments after not having played tournament golf until his retirement two years ago, got in a practice round and had a birdie and three bogeys. Kite, 65, fell into the playoff when he three-putted No. 18, his last hole, from 20 feet. The 1987 losing finalist in this event qualified for the eighth time when he hit a 4-iron second shot to two feet to set up his winning birdie.
