LET'S TAKE note of the excellent -- and lucky -- young readers who recently have won prizes in the Howard County Library's summer reading game.

Young adults Max Seifert, Iris Shin, Jennifer Pirnat, Mariam Keramat, Michael Woo, Maranatha Satchell, Katie Northken, Camille Sileun, Daniel Steciak, Jenna Ebert and Kellsy Berge all won prizes in the contest last week.

The contest entries are short slips of paper describing the books that entrants have read in the program.

There's still time to sign up. And students can get library prizes as well as school credit for books read.

For details on how to register for the summer reading game, contact the Savage librarians at (410) 880-5978.

Puppet program

There are still a few spaces left in the Puppet Players Present program at the Savage Library.

The 45-minute program features three very fractured fairy tales and perhaps a chance to see how puppet plays are presented from the other side of the theater. The puppeteers have revealed the tricks of the trade at other presentations.

The program is Tuesday at 2 p.m.

For details and directions, call staffers at the Savage library at (410) 880-5978.

Jaycees recruiting

The Patuxent Area Jaycees are looking for a few good recruits. Actually, they are holding a major membership drive.

It's an organization that promotes community ties along with a good time. The members always seem to be getting together for golf, ice cream or Orioles games.

They also collect for the Howard County food bank, help at the Mount Pleasant Farm restoration project, park cars at the Columbia Fourth of July fireworks display and do minor repair and yard work for the elderly at the behest of the Howard County Department of Aging.

The next meeting is at 7: 30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Talbot Springs Neighborhood Center.

The Jaycees group also honors Kevin Gartz and Ada Bohorfoush as members of the month for May and June.

Waterworld activity

The Savage Library presents "Waterworld," a drop-in program for children age 6 and older, from 10: 30 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Jazz series

Beat the heat with some cool jazz from the popular Montpelier Cultural Arts Center jazz series. This seven-concert series features performances from the Rhumba Club, the Buck Hill Quartet, Keter Betts, the Charles Covington Trio, Sir Roland Hanna, Ronnie Wells and the Ron Elliston Quintet and Ron Holloway.

Series tickets cost $85; individual performances, $15. All concerts are at 8 p.m. Fridays, beginning Sept. 20.

Because seating is limited, tickets sell fast.

For additional details and directions, call the center at (301) 953-1993.
