Short-order summer of golden humans

August 08, 1996|By Carlos Raphael Greenlee

we all love the smell

of sun-fried skin

we savor the aroma

of slowly burning flesh:

mixed with sun-tan lotion,

perspiration, salt, sand,

and pheromones;

marinated in ocean water

and sea shells,

with a tiny dash

of melanoma

to go.

big big city

breathe:

fear fear fear

into heart and lungs

fear fear fear

mountainous buildings

ominous

fear fear fear

not of bullets of crime

fear fear fear

of the height of the skyline
