Longer salon hours OK'd neighbors may go to court

The Howard County Board of Appeals has decided to let a controversial beauty salon in West Friendship extend its hours of operation, but angry neighbors may contest the decision in court.

Revelations in Hair Design on Pfefferkorn Road, which opened in June 1995, has long battled with neighbors who argue that its traffic and signs are inconsistent with the rural-residential character of the area.

The dispute was renewed last June, when owners Patrice and Robin Davidson asked the Board of Appeals for permission to extend the salon's hours to 8: 30 each night. Now it must close at 6 p.m., except Wednesdays and Fridays when it stays open to 8: 30 p.m.

At a session Tuesday, the board approved the request -- much to the annoyance of neighbors.

"This is a residential area, and it just shouldn't be there to start with," said neighbor Robert Colson. "If you lived out in the country, would you be happy about it?"

Colson said neighbors may take the decision to court.
