A Sykesville man was arrested late Sunday, accused of robbing a clerk at Martin's Food Market of his wallet, court records show.

Richard Hamilton Stewart II, 41, of the 6200 block of Long Meadow Drive faces charges of armed robbery, robbery, assault by threat, battery and false imprisonment.

The clerk, Stephen Mercier, identified Stewart as the man he chased into the woods behind the grocery store in the 6500 block of Georgetown Boulevard after the 7: 22 p.m. crime, state police said.

The clerk told police he felt a sharp object placed against his back as he was working in the dairy locker at the rear of the store. He said a man took his wallet that contained $8 and forced him to lie on the floor.

Stewart was being held yesterday on $50,000 bail at the Carroll County Detention Center. Police did not recover the clerk's wallet. Officers found no weapon.
