Blue edges Hogg to win city tourney Lead nearly evaporates with double bogey on 18th

Henry Blue won the 42nd Baltimore City Amateur championship, but it did not come without a struggle -- certainly a tougher road than the two-time winner might have anticipated over his home course, Green Spring Valley Hunt Club.

A double-bogey five at the last hole left him with a second-round 78, a two-day total of 4-over-par 148, and a one-shot edge on Serge Hogg, who finished 74-75149 in the 31-man field. Late bogeys proved costly to Rick Sovero and Adrian Druzgala, each of whom wound up at 150 for two trips over the 6,489-yard course.

Blue began the day with a four-shot lead and had a three-shot margin for much of the way.

At the 18th tee, a testy 135-yard shot to a tiny undulating green with bunkers left and right, the leader opened the door when he bunkered an 8-iron shot, came out to 30 feet and curled that putt down to four feet. Meanwhile, Hogg waited after sticking a 9-iron shot eight feet below the cup.

With the tournament hanging in the balance, Hogg, who turned 22 Saturday and enters his senior year at Towson State this fall, watched his putt rim the cup and stay out.

Blue's second putt was a sharp-breaking one, and his ball slid by the hole. Both players said they knew where they stood with each other, but had no idea what the rest of the field was doing. Blue was 6-over par for the round, and Hogg applied the pressure with 15 pars and three bogeys.

Larry Storck had the day's low round, a 1-over-par 73, and there were 74s by Sheldon Kalish, a past winner, and Jaime Geilenkirchen, in addition to Sovero.
