An 80-year-old Ellicott City man was injured Tuesday when he lost control of his bicycle and fell under the wheels of a passing tractor-trailer.

Luigi Gino Martelli of the 3000 block of Old Columbia Pike was in serious but stable condition yesterday at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Police said Martelli was riding the bicycle on the sidewalk at Main Street and Old Columbia Pike in Ellicott City when he fell.

The truck driver, Donald Glenn Maring, 41, was eastbound on Main Street when Martelli, westbound on Main Street, fell under the trailer wheels, police said.

Police spokesman Steven Keller said it appeared Martelli was at fault.
