Pirates: Steve Parris became the 15th starter in 102 games. He had made four relief appearances since his recall from the minor leagues. The Pirates are one short of the team record for most starting pitchers, set in 1951.

Rangers: Mickey Tettleton, who missed nine straight games with back problems, returned to the lineup as the designated hitter.

Reds: First baseman Hal Morris missed another game because of a sore back.
